First Aid qualification and scope

The HLTAID002  Provide basic emergency life supportcourse will give you the skills and knowledge required to provide an emergency life support, management of casualty(s) and the incident, in a range of situations, including in the home, workplace or within the community, until the arrival of medical or other assistance. These programs can be conducted at either our training school or onsite at your office or workplace

Qualification Description

This qualification reflectsthe skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty.Provide basic life emergency support may be those who are looking for work in the Health Services industry or those who are seeking to advance their skills and knowledge base in emergency support and first aid principles and practices for either their current work in or affiliation with service sectors where a particular need is identified.

Licensing/Regulatory Information

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.


It is important to note that this First Aid course requires a level of physical ability to complete practical assessments. If your health or fitness restricts you from performing physical activities associated with this program, ( must be able to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor) you will be able to participate but may not be eligible for a nationally accredited certificate

Entry Requirements

There are no academic requirements or pre-requisites for this qualification, however, the student must:

  • Be 15 years of age
  • have sound communication skills
  • undertake and complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment
  • Must have a valid USI
  • Police check
  • Influenza vaccination before they attend work placement.

Student will need to meet the required ACSF levels and Foundation Skills requirements to successfully complete the course. If students do not meet these requirements, students may be required to complete additional foundation skills training with an approved provider prior to commencing this qualification.

This course is a nationally accredited qualification recognized across all industries. This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to provide emergency support at the scene of an accident or illness. Students learn to manage casualty(s), undertake basic life support, provides participants with basic knowledge and understanding to enable the use of a defibrillator in an emergency situation and to manage the incident in the home, workplace or within the community, until the arrival of medical assistance or the state based Ambulance Service

The HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support unit of competency comprises three (3) elements of performance criteria and is derived from the Health Training Package.

Training Program

There are 4 components to this program:

  1. Pre-Learning: Home Learning (Theory/knowledge Pre-learning and assessment)
  2. Classroom Training (Face to Face: Training)
  3. Practical Training
  4. Assessment for both knowledge and skills

Delivery Options

Blended – Combination of face to face, simulated training and online learning.

  1. Live Class 
    i) Face to Face class with a trainer to train, support and guide you through course activities.
    ii)  We can also come to your workplace and deliver a customised program to meet your workplace needs, contact to discuss your needs.
  2. Blended Learning 
    This is a flexible and efficient way to complete your qualification.  It may include live classes, online study, self-paced activities and webinars.
  3. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
    Recognition of Prior Learning is the process that is used to recognise the skills and knowledge you have acquired through personal and work experience – the “University of Life”. The evidence you provide is matched to a complete qualification where possible or alternatively, to part of a qualification. A successful RPL application means that you could receive certification without further study or may be able to fast track through a qualification. Sutherland: Regular classes are held on the first Friday of every month.

Hunter Region: Classes will be arranged if needed as per demand.

Classes can also be arranged on site as per demand.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows a person to receive recognition and credit for the knowledge and skills they have, no matter how and where they were attained. This can include skills from previous study, work experience and life experience.

Credit Transfer

Australian Nursing and Training Services has an obligation to recognise Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by other registered training organisations


HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support will be presented in competency-based mode and the student’s competency will be assessed at all levels according to competencies and performance criteria. The training package for each competency specifies the conditions and method of assessment. Assessment methods range from completing online study, assessment, class attendance and participation, completion of assessment and practical assessment.
